Question:

How do I convert an Australian visit visa to a work permit?

I'm an Indian and I had recently been to Australia and I liked the place. I would want to settle here for the rest of my life and hence I want to apply for a job. But seems it is illegal to work on a visit visa. Could someone help me get a proper information on how to convert my visit visa to a work permit or get a permanent residence while I'm still in Australia?

Many thanks and looking forward to hear from you soon.

  1. you can not change your visa, you will need to apply to immigrate, this can take a long time and you need to be a skilled worker in an occupation Australia needs. You must apply from your home country

your occupation must be on this list to qualify

    visa

you must pass this points test to qualify

  2. you are right, it is illegal to work on a visit visa, well in fact no one in Australia will be willing to hire someone on a visit visa.

There isn't any provision for converting a visit visa to a permanent resident because tourists/ visitors are allowed entry on the condition that they will stay for a certain period and purpose and leave. So attempting to stay while you are on such a visa implies to the visa officers that you lied about the purpose of your visit in the first place.

The only option for an Indian citizen in your case is to go back to India and then apply for the General Skilled Migration system which determines your eligibility for immigration based on points for your education, age, linguistic skills and earning ability.
