How do I convert straight (3 wire) 220v to 2 wire 110v?

Thank you for the answers. I am going to change my question a little bit. I have two hot wires and a ground wire at my 220v outlet and no neutral wire is there any way to wire in a 110v outlet from that without a transformer/without a neutral wire?

  1. Your "additional details" tell me to say "no". You cannot ADD an additional  110 volt outlet from the existing 220 volt outlet without a separate neutral wire. You must have a 3 wire coming from the panel to the 220 volt outlet. Even at that, any load you put on the new 110 volt outlet would put an uneven amp balance at the double pole breaker in the panel.

So, I conclude that you cannot do that. Sorry.

  2. Wish I knew what gauge you are referring to.............but you know you only need 1hot and 1neutral and 1 ground for 120volts............so black to black , white to white....and red becomes you ground wire........if you have a gound in your 240 wire use it.........and just eliminate the third wire.....I also strip the whole wire and seperated them and pull what i need through.......and ended up with a piece I can use for something else later.....(pig tail ex.) all the best....hope I understand you correctly.

  3. You have two 110V AC lines and one neutral.  Most likely the colors are black, red and white, hopefully a bare copper ground wire is also there.  Use the black and white for 110V to your new outlet (or whatever) and ground it with the bare copper (if it is there).

Edit:  you say you have no neutral wire.  You can go to your breaker box and change one of the wires going to the second breaker to a neutral wire by connecting it to the neutral bar (you should probably label it as neutral or pigtail a white wire).  Then you would have 110V with ground at your new outlet.

  4. 220v single phase,  is  110  on each side, with a neutral,

if you have a voltage meter set it at voltage, find the neutral  touch it with the black color probe, ,then touch the

other red  probe to one side of the other wire, you should read 110v

find the Ground or neutral, wire,  that will be the white wire on 110v the other wires will have a black or red covering, that's the hot side of your 110v , put a red or black wire to the gold s***w on a duplex outlet, the neutral or white one to the silver s***w, and to the ground, Shut the power off first ,

  5. Transformer.Or go to breaker box and take the white lead off its breaker and move it to the neutral bar(where the other whites are.
