Question:

How do I convince my employer that snap traps and glue traps are a terrible idea to control mice and chipmunks

I work in retail, and a chipmunk found his way into our receiving area just recently. Today the store manager announced that "Alvin lost his tail. We almost got 'em!" as if it were some hunt we were all to be on. I felt sorry for the chipmunk, because he did lose a good part of his tail in a snap trap. Tomorrow, EcoLab is coming out with heavy duty traps to exterminate the chipmunk, since he has not been shooed out the back door yet. How do I convince my manager that there are more humane ways to do this? He wants it dead, and that's the fate for any future rodents that find their way in. I just don't think it's right. I am a vegetarian due to my Buddhist lifestyle, and I do not want him to think I am making this a political stunt. I am just concerned about the welfare of the local animals. Any realistic help is appreciated, thank you.

  1. Tell him what the person above said, that he is wiping out God's creations. Or if he isn't into religion much,

Just tell him that the chipmunk was simply looking for shelter from predators outside. It was looking for food, found itself into the receiving area and couldn't get out. It has done nothing wrong and does not deserve punishment in any way, and definitely does not deserve to be killed.

People are put in jail for a reason, innocent people get let off. Your employer is being unfair, and sentencing the chipmunk to death. If he still doesn't believe he is doing the wrong thing, explain how we are all animals and that every one has their own right.

If nothing works, call EcoLab and tell them that they are not needed (your employer may get angry). Try and get a humane rat trap, chuck in some food and leave it overnight. Hopefully the chipmunk will walk in, thinking to get the food but then be trapped.

If you really care about the chipmunk, you could take it to the vet and get its tail checked if you want. If you can't, then rinse it in water, bandage it and release the chipmunk somewhere far away.

But during the process, try not to talk to the chipmunk, or stroke it too much as it will imprint on humans and then start to believe that all humans are like you.

Good luck, and all the best for the chipmunk!
