We're both out of shape, and we both want to. The difference is that he's a lot less willing to act upon it. There's a lot of shyness/self-confidence issues there, which is partly why working out would benefit him specifically.
Personally, I need him so we can keep each other on track.
The main thing I'm trying to avoid is forcing him into it. I know for a fact he wants to, it's just not something he readily talks about. It's out of his comfort zone. I want him to come willingly out of his shell rather than crack it open and possibly hurt him in the process (which I'm willing to do if necessary: he's suffocating in there. I speak from experience.)
