I really would like to spend a semester in spain, but my parents think it is a better idea to go while in college, which i do not want to do. How do I convince them that High school is the time to go?

  1. its better to go while in college

  2. I studied abroad twice: once my junior year of high school and once my 3rd year of college. In my experience, I learned a lot more from my first study abroad (in high school). During that stay I had a chance to live with a French family, go to a French high school, and really experience the French culture firsthand. During my college stay, I lived in a dorm-type environment, took classes in English, and hung out with my American friends.

Additionally, having the high school experience can help you get into a university and help you prepare for the college experience by being more independent and cultured.

  3. Try turning up the volume on the stereo or TV in your room really loud.

  4. I had the same argument.  My parents won.  I had the time of my life!!!!

I helped a young lady do it in High school, she didn't.  She was miserable and developed anorexia while abroad.  She was moved around a couple of times to different countries, and it turned out really badly for her.

Really look inside yourself, and try to see whether you are mature enough to be away from EVERYTHING you are familiar with for that long.   It's kind of scary, when you think about it.

Your parents might be right.  You will be better able to cope with any adversities that come along (and they will - I lived in Spain during a coup.  Just imagine how scary that was...turned out okay, but it was a pretty tense time.  I might have been a lot more afraid had I been much younger).

If you really think you're ready for such an adventure (and I still think University is better - or both)  try explaining that you will get better grades in Spanish, because you will have the experience using the language.

    ¡Buena Suerta a tí!

Have a great trip, whenever they let you go.

  5. If you already know which college you want to go to and have acceptable grades, studying abroad is pointless.  On the other hand if you are in college studying abroad can actually help you get a career and get you where you want to be in life.  The only thing high school good for is getting you into college.

  6. I think you should wait until you go to college...at least your sophomore year of college at that.

  7. contact your local student exchange program and get information

  8. When you try to convince them, throw around the word "experience" a lot, even mix it up with "good experience" or even "life experience". Adults eat that c**p up.
