Question:

How do I convince my parents into letting me babysitting?

They know I'm very responsible... and they're aware of the fact that I kind of in need of the money. But most of all, they know I'm great with younger kids! I have over 20 cousins and I love taking care of the younger ones. And they love hanging out with me (especially the two year olds)! What they're concerned about is safety. How do I convince them that I'm perfectly capable of whatever could happen (if anything were to happen). Oh, and I forgot to mention that my mom is a pediatrician (doctor for kids), so her perspective is that everything's going to go wrong and that the kids are going to die or something dramatic like that.

  1. Tell your mom that you promise to call her if anything goes wrong.

  2. Prove your mom wrong--take some safety courses or CPR classes at the local Y.  If your parents know you're responsible then it shouldn't be a problem... I think it's the trust factor--you got to build up on that.

    Good luck !

  3. Maybe try asking them if you can try babysitting one night that they are home. That way they can see how good you are at taking care of a kid. I think it is sometimes hard to realize your baby is growing up. I would just tell them they need to trust you and help you grow up instead of inhibiting your growth. Good luck and just give them a chance.

  4. Just make sure you don't play any Gary Glitter music while you are trying to sway them.

  5. Tell your parents that you know the risks. You've already looked after your cousins and you were responsible with them, nothing bad happened.  Try bargaining like saying 'Mom i'll call you every hour, and if something goes wrong at all'. Or you could try saying you'll take a friend with you, so it'll be easier for you.

  6. tell them you're prepared to discuss safety issues, that you'll be very very careful, make sure you have lots of emergency phone numbers etc.
