How do I convince my parents that I can take care of a dog?

My parents think that I am going to get tired of a dog. But I know that I would never do that. How do I convince them that getting a dog is a good thing. And that I am responsible to take care of one???? Please help me because I have wanted a dog ever since I was 4 years old!!!!! Please help me in any way you can.

Parents say what they do for a reason. If they think you'll get tired of it then you probably will. And by "tired of it" i don't necessarily HAVING the dog but doing all the work for it. That includes proper feeding and watering, brushing, training (potty, obedience, manners), daily walks, arranging vet/grooming visits, and so on.

Many teens think that they can properly care for a dog and that they won't get tired of it, but honestly - they usually do. I'm not talking about all the teens in the world (some do make responsible pet owners) but in most cases.... mom and dad are usually spot on because they know their child.

What i would do is get yourself a job. Earn some money to help pay for the dog you want. Do research on what breed you want and where you plan on getting your dog from. Research different training methods. You can use any web search browser OR go to the library for books on these subjects.

Then you need to write out a list of responsibilities YOU will handle (like feeding, brushing, etc) and what you will need their help with (driving to the vet, paying for some things, etc.) Be truthful about it! You will need their help. I would also look into the future - what happens with the dog when you have school and want to go to the mall with friends? What about when you go to college? What about when you move out?

Other than that, i'm afraid that what mom/dad says goes. They pay for everything -house, car(s), insurance, groceries, supplies, etc - and may not want to add "dog" to that list. When you can support yourself and have your own place, you can get a dog.

show that your responsible enough to take care of yourself and the people you live with. always clean up after yourself and help around the house. this will show them your a responsible person and that you can clean up after a dog.

Show your parents you have the dedication to take care of a pup, by doing chores.  Pick one or two chores, and do them every single day.  Maybe dishes, maybe helping with laundry or vaccuming, cleaning the bathroom.. ask your folks.  Do these chores every single day for six months, including when you feel sick and on weekends.  If you can commit to doing those cores for 130 days, you might be ready to consider a dog, who you'll have to walk, feed, brush, train, pick up p**p after, every day for 5000 days in a row.  

Your commitment to your chores should show your parents how responsible you can be :)

Best advice - stop asking and wait til you are living on you own in a dog friendly building.  If you aren't old enough for a decent job to pay for the food and vet bills then you cannot take care of a dog.

do a powerpoint presentation on how you are going to take care of the dog ie get a paper round or job to pay for food and vets bills leave it lying around so they read it and then sit down and talk calmly about the situation and see what they say
