Question:

How do I convince my parents to let me climb on the roof?

I absolutely love to draw and the view is absolutely amazing from my roof. Today I asked if i could go up there and just doodle or gaze at the stars but they said no and we got into this whole argument about the dangers of falling off a roof. I understand their concern, but I'm positive that I won't fall off the roof unless I jump. I told them I've done it before and took 2 friends up there(this was because one of my friends often goes on her roof to watch the sunset, sunrise, etc and she's pretty "skilled" at it and she even told me it was perfectly safe to climb my roof) and they got mad. I know a lot of people climb on their roof when they have writer's block, or artist's block, etc. My house isn't that high. Its one story and I can climb up it without using a ladder. I've been on it a few times and I'm positive its almost impossible to fall off. How do I convince them that it's safe to go up there? Thanks.

*it would be cool if some adults approved of this, for reassurance.

  1. I'm glad you love to draw and enjoy looking at the sky. Could you build a tree house or an elevated "fort"?

Your parents are concerned for your well being but they are also concerned for that of the roof too.

In high summer heat the temp.on the roof can get well into 100's and take a long time to cool down. The lining under the shingles can easily tear making it possible for water to get into the wood and cause problems when winter comes. They are not really being mean, they are in reality trying to keep a roof over your head.

  2. Wow you sound alot like me, i love to draw and look at the sky but i know my parents would have a fit if they caught me out there,so i would just say go for it and s***w them youre not going to get hurt.end of story

  3. As a mother, as long as the roof is structurally sound, and it is a one-story, I dont' think I'd have a problem with it. Now if it has a wicked pitch (slant/angle) then I'd say no, it's too easy to lose your footing regardless of How Careful you are. Good Luck! Keep Drawing!!!

  4. I think you ought to listen to your parents. Just because you don't think you wouldn't fall off the roof doesn't mean you won't. Remember, your parents have much more life experience than you do. Sorry it's not the answer I'm sure you're looking for, but this is what I think. Also, I'm an adult, so you're not getting approval from me on this, as I agree with your parents.
