  3. Hi there,

Hopefully, by knowing how to take care of a Guinea Pig and making a few small accommodations, your parents will be convinced to let you have one.

Guinea Pigs do p**p alot and their pee (like most animal pees) stinks.  They cannot be housetrained, so they will p**p around the house if you let them roam.  Therefore, you need to keep your guinea in a cage with fairly deep sides or a glass cage, and make sure that the cage is fairly large because you want your pet to have enough space to move around.   Also, you will need to fill the cage with shredded newspaper or cedar chips (or even straw).  I used cedar chips because they reduce the odor of the urine.  Also, you should change your pet's cage often to help avoid stinking up the house.

I live in Michigan, where it can get very cold.  When I had my Guinea Pig, during the winter months, I made a little play area out of cardboard boxes; I connected two or three boxes together and kept their bottoms in tact so my Guinea Pig would not ruin the carpet with his p**p or urine.  I would take him out of the cage every day and let him run around the play area.  Cardboard boxes are great because they are inexpensive, they are biodegradable, they are easy to transport, and they are easy to throw away and replace with new ones to create a fresh play area.

    Good luck!
