I'm 17 years old and a senior in high school. My parents want me to be responsible like an adult but treat me like I'm 5 years old. What can I tell them?

  1. You will have to SHOW them you are not 5 years old anymore. Do everything you can for yourself and help out around the house without being asked or told.  Make sure you do your own laundry and put it away.  Start dinner every now and then.  Pick up things that aren't in the right place and put them where they belong even if they aren't yours.  Make sure your priorities are straight.  Do you homework before going out with friends and stay home to study when you know you need to.  Don't go to bed so late that your parents have to get you up in the morning.  Don't rely on your parents to take you to school, pick you up after, and buy the extra stuff you want at school (like something to wear to the prom, yearbooks and class rings).  And get a part-time weekend job if you can.

Once you have established a routine of being responsible (it could be a month or two), sit down with your parents and make sure they know/notice what you have been doing.  Get your thoughts organized, even rehearse what you're going to say, and then present everything to them.  I know it sounds ridiculous, but it usually works.

  2. You may think you are being treated like a five year old but the real story is you have parents that care and love y0u enough to let you know they do.

  3. then you have to show them that you are responsible.

  4. Show them you are responsible and they shouldn't treat you that way anymore.

  5. Stop acting like your 5
