I have my chin in my room which can sometimes get around 85. I know this is bad for him. I froze a water bottle and have put that in there but is there anything else I can do to keep him cool and comfotable?

  1. Fans don't do much to cool a chinchilla. The best thing is to move them to a room that doesn't exceed 75 degrees or get an air conditioner for the room. Frozen clay pots or tile slabs can help but it isn't going to be he best thing for your chinchilla long term.

  2. Wet him with some cool water. And blow on him. [=

  3. BN's got the right idea.

Fans will only work on animals who can sweat, and that's not a chinchilla. They will also work if you can mist the animal while the fan is blowing on it, also not a good thing with chinchillas.  The fan will only blow hot air around, unless you blow across a big block of ice. Not practical in most cases.

Go to a home improvement store, if you have one close by and get scraps of slate or marble, like the stuff they use on countertops. They may even let you have them for free. Keep them in the fridge and put one in your cage. Alternate.

I have found something similar in a pet shop. There they call it the CHINCHILLER and it's a bit more pricey, but it works too.

If you have a basement put his cage in it during the hottest time of the day, just don't let him out.

PS: you can find small 1-room 110Volt window AC's in places like Sears or Walmart for fairly reasonable(under $100). Or put an ad in the paper. Some people have these things sitting around. I got mine just for a back up in case my AC ever died. And I got it for free.

  4. Maybe use a fan near him and give him an Ice cube or two to l**k to keep him cool! :-)

  5. Maybe get a few small box fans to make sure the air is circulating nicely.   Hot always feels better with a breeze.
