Question:

How do I cope with living in a cultural wasteland?

There are things I would love to do downtown, but they are all kind of artsy, or expensive. Like attending a poetry reading or buying tickets to the symphony. Problem is, my other half isn't interested in these things and I don't want to go alone. How do convince him to broaden his cultural horizons?

  1. You can't.  He is who he is.  You chose to be with him and you knew going in who he was.  So go places you enjoy with your friends.  Personally I find that being with someone I don't share interests with to be boring and a waste of my time.  But hey - each to his or her own.

  2. you cannot change another person, sorry. even when you use guilt.

  3. Do you do the things he likes to do?

What I would say is -

If I do the the things you enjoy (which I may not necessarily enjoy) then you should reciprocate and do the things that I enjoy.

  4. Hmm...How CAN you change a person?
