How do I copy a DVD of home movies onto my Mac?

I've got a DVD-R disk of old family videos copied from VHS (not copy writed). I can PLAY the DVD's but I want to download them onto my computer so I can edit them. I've tried a number of different ways but no luck, Any ideas?

  1. If you just want to save dvd to computer, handbrake is enough and totally free

    But if you want to backup and convert dvd to other video audio formats, try aimersoft dvd ripper for mac, I use it for a long time, it can easily convert dvd with high quality,  that's really nice, you can check them out here for free

  4. For free? Is that what you want? Try Handbrake, link below. Works fine for me.

    Edit: If this Mac has iMovie, it can import the video from Handbrake and then export it in any of 7 video formats using the "Expert settings".
