Help! My computer (Windows XP) have some problems that it only displays the desktop background when I turn on my computer. I tried to start in safe mode but everything was black with nothing to display.

It looks like the only way left is to recover my computer (Emachines T3990). But I did not backup my personal data (pictures, docs.) on another hard drive. Can any one tell me how to copy data when Windows cannot start?

  1. you said it only displays desktop background right, at that time, press alt + ctrl + del to call task manager

then go to Application, New Task, browse C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

    then open, ok.

if above doesn't resolved it, I suggest download a live cd linux such as ubuntu to do the backup.

you just need to burn the iso, then boot the cd, then plug in your hard drive and start copying, done., shutdown

for the last step, re-install xp.

  2. repair windows

like if you was gonna reinstal

but instead of choosing to reinstal, choose to repair, that way you wont loose any of your program updates or any data

if you need any help email me at  loviedovie@rocketmail.com

  3. The Norton Ghost installation CD is bootable into DR-DOS if you set up your CMOS to boot from it (assuming it's not already), so you can create an image of your hard disk onto an external drive.
