You can use it when you want to know how to copyright songs. It can also be used to copyright song lyrics. As a means of protection, copyright is all you really need for music and songs.

In the U.S., you automatically enjoy copyright just by creating something.  You don't need to use the copyright symbol, etc to have copyright.  However, to enforce copyright infringement, you need to register your work with the library of congress copyright office.
