How do I cover old un-stainable wood putty that is too light for the natural wood when stained?

I have sanded the chair, but the lighter un-stainable wood putty still shows through in the cracks. Could I use the correct color putty over it and sand again or must I now be forced to paint the chair to have a uniform look?

  1. You can buy ink pen liking markers in stain tones..I will post s apicture here..they are available at Home Depot in many colors..I am a 37 year experienced painter and we use to use them on our warranty work on cabinets we have stained and finished in place in new homes..after a few months alot of houses will settle and show unstained lines where the cabinets settle and show raw wood..heres a link...
