I want to create a FTP Server so I can share my files with a friend of mine who is about a hundred miles away at college. How do I do this with either Ipswitch WS FTP Pro or FireFTP (The FTP Client addon for Mozilla FireFox)?

  1. I would suggest you use VSFTPD, as both of the ones you've suggested have had serious security problems. When you're running an FTP, everyone's going to be trying to attack your PC to dump warez on your FTP, sso nothing less than the very best will do. You should also have a carefully honed firewall, and you need to check the logs. Make sure your server daemon or networking stack is set to IP ban people after too many incorrect password entry attempts. Lastly, pick a different port number than 21.

Also, I would suggest you ideally not use FTP for this task. At the very least, why not move up to SFTP. It's more secure, and usually interests scriptkiddies a bit less.
