Question:

How do I create a contact sheet in Photoshop without any gaps?

I've produced many contact sheets using photoshop, but they have always gaps and spaces between each image. I want to close all gaps so that the whole image is one solid mass of smaller images. Can this be done?

  1. Yes, of course, anything can be done in Photoshop!

What I would do is this.

Open a new document, and make it the size that accommodates all the photos you want on 1 page.  And decide if you need a BG color, but if you have no gaps, it probably does not matter.

So, then have open all the images you want to place on the sheet and one at a time do this ---

    1. Select>Select All

    2. Edit>Copy

    3. Click on the black sheet, Edit>Paste

    4. Now you have the freedom to move it around on the page where ever you like using the move tool.

    REPEAT this with every image.

When you are done, you now have 1 sheet with several images... and they are actually in LAYERS. So, go to Layer>Flatten Image, which will flatten it down into 1 layer, which then can be saved as a jpg and printed.  Please note though.... once flattened, you cannot move or adjust the individual images anymore.

ALSO - FYI --- there is a contact sheet option in Photoshop, if you have the correct version.  Go to File>Automate>Contact sheet.  And you can pick and choose all the options for Photoshop to make a contact sheet on its own.  You might play with it, but if not... you can use the steps I listed above.

    Thanks for reading!

  2. I'm not sure which version of Photoshop you have but in Contact Sheet II in PS CS3 there is an auto spacing option. Uncheck this box and they bunch up just like you asked for.

For this go to File > automate > Contact Sheet II

  3. Nibi's suggestion is excellent! I just want to "fill in the gaps" he left.

It only works if all your images have the same size. If they don't you will have gaps. The gaps will be from column to column if you choose to add them "Across First" or the row to row, if you select to add the "Down First".
