I think you would have a hard time getting donations considering that a lot of it is their own fault.  Also, it would be hard to help people that lose a $300,000 house unless you had millions and millions of dollars in donations.

Creating a fund is another bureaucracy. If you want to pay someone's mortgage or the new increase, just do it. It's not hard to find struggling people, ask around. Try real-estate people who may be able to share information more easily than banks.

Check craigslist for your area and look for those who're asking for help or those who're selling a lot of stuff. You can verify the story of mortgage trouble easily enough.

Call a bank and ask the officers to give your name to someone who's behind or has been trying to re-finance and can't do it.
