  1. You can cover the grass with cardboard or newspaper, and then more earth, and top with mulch.

Or, you can dig out the grass, and then add topsoil, plants, and mulch.

  2. go to a nursery and pick out a nice tree. dig up a circle somewhere -- take out the grass too. have the people from the nursery plant it in for ya. if you want, add some flowers.

and BOOM omg no way!!! you have an island...

  3. Using washable paint, paint a pattern of the bed that you want.  Then dig the grass out of it.  It would be ideal to dig the grass up, if your only going to put a thin layer of mulch on top some of the grass could grow through.  Then go and pick up your tree and any other plants you want.  I wouldn't have the nursery install the plants though.  I used to work for a nursery for a few years and they were getting 60 percent of the cost of the plants to install them.  So if you bought a 300 dollar tree and 200 dollars worth of shrubs, you'd be paying 300 dollars extra to have them installed.  Your local nurseries might not charge this much but the bottom line is it is too much to pay.  Save a lot of money and put the stuff in yourself.
