I recently adopted a black dog. My other dog if a fully white rat terrier so when I cut her nails there is a reddish part in her nails that let's me know I'm cutting too far. The dog I adopted has extremely long nails which might be uncomfortable to walk in, his nails are all black and big, how can I cut his nails without worrying I will hurt him?

  1. Just cut a little at a time, since you cant see the quick. You will see white in the middle of the nail you just cut. It'll take a little time to get use to it.

  2. this video shows you how to cut the nails of a black dog =) it even shows you what to do if you accidentally cut too far

  3. To start just cut a little off at a time.  Soon they will be the same length as the other dog.  If you are really worried you may want the vet cut them until they are the same length as your other dog.

  4. You know what you should do? You should get the Pedi Paws nail filer. I use it and it doesn't hurt my dog and it's the best thing out there and it really works. It files the nail down and with cutting the nail with you can go too far down (with the red as you said) and hurt your doggy!!! Use it on both dogs! Seriously! Get it! It's only $20. My response seriously sounds like an infomercial or something, but I'm dead serious.
