Question:

How do I deal with mould from a damp wardrobe?

I moved onto a two storey house early this year. I sleep upstairs and the walk in wardrobe backs onto the ensuite. I recently discovered green furry mould inside some shoes that are kept in the wardrobe Some of these haven't been worn for weeks and they weren't damp when they were stored. There are no obvious signs of mould on the walls either in the wardrobe or the bathroom. The problem has only arisen now that is winter. I suspect the wardrobe is damp as it gets little light and there is no ventilation. Any suggestions for what to do?

  1. I would suggest buying a dehumidifier.  Even though I live in Wyoming (what's considered a desert), I have to use one in my basement during the spring and summer months.  Somehow, humidity seeps in.  A dehumidifier may help keep the mold from coming back, but also make sure you wash your shoes, any clothes, the floor, and walls, etc to keep it from growing.  Also, you may want to hire an inspector to make sure there isn't water damage inside your wardrobe, or mold under the flooring or in the drywall.  Mold is very unhealthy and can cause serious health and home problems if you don't take care of it properly.  Good luck!

  2. Could you cut ventalation holes into the wardrobe?
