    Yes, you can password a word document.

    To do it in 2007 open the file and go Office Button (The big circle) > Prepare > Encrypt Document. Then enter the password you want to use and close down word.

    To do it in 2003 open the file and to Tools > Options. Then click on the security tab and click "Set Password To Open" Then enter the password you want to use and close down word.
