How do I delete the images off a compact flash card?

I wouldn't do that.. you'd risk corrupting your memory card... just delete them in the camera... if you want them completely off your card then you need to reformat it.

drag the file off to the trashcan icon on the desktop...

The images might still be recoverable on the CF card until such time as they are written over.  Recovering the pictures from the CF card after you have deleted them takes some software specifically designed to recover them.
