If you're using Mozilla Thunderbird, I would delete all email accounts this way:

1. In Thunderbird, click the Tools->Account Settings menu item.

2. Click on each account in turn and click the Remove Account button.

If you just wipe the hard disk before you sell it you can safely access your email account from a new computer. There's no need to close it down.
