I am interested in obtaining Italian citizenship.

I was born in Canada and hold only Canadian citizenship. My father was born in Canada and holds only Canadian citizenship. However, my paternal grandfather was born in Italy.

I do not know if my grandfather became a naturalized Canadian and lost his Italian citizenship as a result. My father does not know either. My paternal grandfather died when my father was very young.

How do I determine if my grandfather lost his Italian citizenship before my father was born?

  1. Get a death certificate? I think they might have to put

nationality on that. Or google the federal govt under immigration and click on 'contact us' and ask them how you would find out if your grandfather took out citizenship. As he has been dead for so long I doubt they would say they couldn't tell you. You may have to write an actual letter for the information. Tell them you are looking up the family tree.
