How do I determine the wavelength of light produced when an electron in hydrogen drops prom the third energy level to the first?

  1. use the formula:

    1/lambda = R_h*[1/(n_1)^2 - 1/(n_2)^2] (see: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hba...

    R_h ~ 1.097*10^7 m^-1

    so 1/lambda ~ 1.097 *10^-7 *(1 - 1/9) = 1.097*10^7 * 8/9

    or lambda = 1.0255 * 10^-6 m or 1.025 microns == 1025 nm
