You can usually determine year by serial number cross reference.  Link below to a Merc. serial table.

Its in the motor number.  Get a Chilton manual and look it up or thake the engine model/serial number to a boat dealer and they can look it up for you.

If you take the numbers off the motor and call a dealer or place that services them they can tell you. I have a 81 tower of power. I only kmow this because my boat is a 81 and the motor is original. The tower of power rocks!
