  1. Depends on how deep you are probing.  You might need a shovel or you might need a tea spoon.....

  2. Dig it out with whatever you have, scan the dirt you just dug out. If there is no signal, scan the hole again and if there is no signal there or the dirt you dug out, it was probably a false reading or black sand. If there is a signal in the hole, dig deeper and careful. If there is a signal in the dirt you dug out sift through it. Treat it as an excavation of an archaeological site.

  3. All you need is a gardeners spade, it's easier to handle than a shovel, and can be used in almost any type ground, sand, dirt, grass, mud.

You can find a cheap one at Walmart in the Home and Garden section. They will know what you are talking about if you tell a clerk you need a gardeners spade.

  4. You may be under/over estimating the depth being signaled by your detector. Try burying objects of different size, different metals at different depths, as a way of verifying how your detector behaves in different situations.

  5. A lot of people use a large bladed knife...so as to not damage whatever you are digging..if it isn't too deep of course!
