Question:

How do I discourage pesky rodents and deer from my flowers?

I just discovered that my waxwing Begonia blossoms have been eaten. I've spent over $100 replacing Impatiens and other annuals. I use "Liquid Fence" which is a spray containing coyote urine, but even that doesn't help. I live in the Midwest. Any suggestions?

  1. I feel your pain.  I too have a herd of deer in my backyard.  Deer eat everything in their paths.  The only thing to do is put up temporary fencing.  Deer are creatures of habit.  They take the same route as long as they can.  If you can discourage them from eating your begonia by fencing it in, they might take a different route.  Good luck.

    P.S.  Getting a dog helped a little.

  2. Folks, this is a question that has been asked hundreds of times by hundreds of frustrated gardeners and answered by hundreds of well meaning folks with hundreds of home remedy ideas.  Soap, human hair, urine, dogs, deer begone, etc., etc.  The only thing that will deter deer, and rodents for that matter, is fencing.

  3. i heard human hair clippings will stop deer from coming around

  4. It might sound crazy, but this might be a good solution:  dried milk.  The Green Gardenista recommended this solution, since apparently deer (and perhaps other mammals?) don't like the taste or smell of milk after being weened.

Here's the article for a more insightful description than I can give!  :-)  Hope this helps!
