Question:

How do I dispose of empty 1 lb. propane bottles?

We have a few of the small 1.02 lb. propane bottles that we've emptied and I don't want to just throw them in the trash. Though I think the environment is already circling the drain I'll still try to recycle what I can. I was hoping there's a place that will take them and dispose of them properly. Or can I pull the schrader valve and releave the remaining pressure so they can be disposed of as scrap metal?

Thanks

  1. you might try freecycle to give them away.

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of groups with members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer . Membership is free.

    I've never used them.

  2. here you can take pressurised containers to the tip and the council deal with them and scrap them. but if you can get the valve out yourself, yes you can then put them in with the metal recycling.

oooh, you reminded me, time for my bed. i have a wood burner home-made from a 13 kg gas bottle in my caravan, it needs feeding. night night!

  3. you need to bring them to your local recycling center.  They have a special dorp off for them, and they know how to dispose of them.  Sometimes there is a recycling center at your local dump.
