The recycling organization in my area has asked that the tops be removed before the processing of plastic bottles. When asked where to dispose of the tops, the agent I spoke with recommends the trash as a suitable repository. Are there any green, alternatives out there?

  1. I'm worried that an agent for a recycling center suggested just tossing them in the trash.  I think you should call your recycling center back, and ask to speak to a person a little higher up, tell them your dilema, what a person from their company has already suggested, and found out if there is a better solution.

  2. We cant recycle them where I'm at either, I would say find a way to reuse them EX: Class projects for elementary schools, Or try to do your own home projects. Make something fun and colorful for on your wall!

  3. There must be recycling in you are, I always put them in mine and I have had no problems.

  4. If you don't have a recycle container for your curb to put it in the recycle center usually has a bucket or some such container to put them in. All the ones in my area do. If not you should suggest it to them.

  5. In my city only #1 and #2 marked plastic can be recycled. You are NOT supposed to recycle ANY plastic that is NOT marked with these numbers. Bottle caps are usually NOT marked so they go in the trash. The recycling company has people that cut off the tops and/or sort them out of the recycing bins so that they are NOT recycled. The are then thrown in the land-fill.

Don't think that because yo are putting something in your recycling bin that it gets recycled. You are just making more work and making it harder for them to do their job.

  6. My local recyclers say the same thing.  I think the problem is that a lot of plastic bottle caps are composed of multiple layers of different types of plastic, using a hard outer shell and a softer inner layer to create a seal.  This makes them too difficult to sort appropriately for recycling.  The general rule is that most recyclers only accept plastic with recycling numbers.  Caps are not numbered.

  7. I've never heard of this.. the tops are still plastic, right? (Not really a question =P)

Some people I know put all their caps in a plastic bag inside the recycling bin to prevent they from falling out from the move from the bin to the truck.

That's all I can give ya, sorry.
