How do I divide a group of people evenly by last name?

I am hosting a potluck for a large group of people and would like to divide by last name so we have roughly the same number of people bringing salad main dish and dessert Where do I put the breaks

You really cant. what if 20 peoples name starts with (A) and only one stars with (B). Just divide the group into 3. That should give you a more even estimate

I would add up the number of food groups, appetizer, main dish, vege dish, casserole, salad, desert, beverage, etc. & divide that number of food groups into the number of people helping out.  Assign a leader for each group to turn in a menu for their group to you.  That sounds like fun.

If you want to do it alphabetically by last name, divide the group in half, A-M & N-Z.  It's not going to be an even number but  whatever.  Assign a leader to each group & give him the food groups & let him handle working out the menu.

Between J & K as there are not an awful lot of names that start with V Q X Y & Z.
