It's a straight 6, 4.0 liter. Limited Edition, where is the pan located and how do I take it off to do a complete flush and get all of the "gunk" out?

  1. take it to a garage and have it done by a pro for about $ 100 if you want to do it your self it will be verry messy

  2. You cant unless you plan to pull the transmission and torque conveter out.  Let a shop do it with their machine.

  3. Take it to Jiffy Lube or other Lube shop, DO NOT take it to a transmission shop... Transmission shops are not in business to make the little profit on a trans service, they are in business to make the big bucks, meaning transmission repairs or rebuilds... you just want the fluid changed, so go to a shop that can only do just that...

They will attached a tap into your transmission cooler line and while the engine is running and circulating the fluid, it is being drawn out into a machine and replaced with new fluid until the the fluid is running out clear/red... Then the attachment is removed and your line re-attached... Thats the only way to properly and completely replace all of the fluid in your transmission, which is likely 12-14 quarts, this method also cleans out the fluid in the torque converter...

    Should be about 100.00...

  4. you can not drain the convertor or clean the valvebody without using a pump...for what it is worth take it to a shop and have it done.

  5. You take the pan off and clean it out, put a new filter in, put it back on and replace the 4 quarts or so of fluid. Then, before you start the engine you break the low pressure transmission cooling line, start the engine and add fluid to the transmission as it pumps the old fluid out of the cooling line into a bucket marked off in quarts. Just add a quart every time the level in the bucket goes up a quart.  Oil change places have machines that hook to the cooling lines to do it. Just make sure they do a regular service first or they'll be mixing new fluid with old when they start the flush.

One think to look out for if you do it yourself is that the 96 Grand Cherokee doesn't run the transmission pump in park. You have to have it in neutral to pump the old fluid out. You also have to have it in neutral to check the fluid level accurately.
