  1. It depends on the writing standards your teacher/professor directed you to use (e.g., APA, or MLA, or Chicago, etc).

However, generally an in-text citation for anything but a direct quote is considered a paraphrase ... and it's written as follows (Author's last name, publication date) (here's an example (Smith, 2007).

For direct quotes, the in-text citation must also include the page number the quote was taken from, for example: (Smith, 2007, p.11).

The electronic medium is a bit tricky when it comes to formal academic writing and the propoer use of citations and references.  Generally, the same rules apply for online material as hard-copy (journals, books, other newsprint), that is you use the author's last name, publication date, and page number for any quote you take from an online source.

This gets tricky because not all online sources actually include the author's name to an article or other work AND, sometimes the online source doesn't even list page numbers.

following are some rules-of-thumb for using online sources in a paper.

    (1) If author's last name is avaialble, and publication date as well as page number is available, then use all three for in-text citations of direct quotes.

    (2) For online material that you paraphrase, you only need to include in-text the author's last name and the publication date.

    (3) If the author is not listed in the electronic source, then use the title of the article you are quoting from, then the publication date, then the page number ... for example:

(The Principles of Management, 1989, p.11)

    (4) If there are no authors lited, and not title to the article, then use the name of the web site to replace the author and/or title of the article, for example:

    (Purdue University, 2008, p.11)
