Question:

How do I do f(g(2))?

f(x) = 3x + 2

and

g(x) = x - 3

Its due tomorrow, please help! :)

  2. plug in 2 to the g function and then the answer to the g function to the f function.

    x - 3

    2 - 3 = -1

    g= -1

    3x+2

    3(-1) +2 = -1

    f(g(2))= -1

  3. 3x+2(x-3(2))

    3x+2 (x-6)

    3x+2x-12

    5x-12

    x=12/5

  4. This is called a composition function. It works by first plugging in the variable into the inner most function then using that answer to plug in for x.

    First plug 2 into the function g. g(2) = 2 - 3 = -1.

    Simply find f(-1) now.

    Hope this helps.  Composition functions can be tricky to understand at first as the notation is weird but they become easy.
