How do I do this purl stitch?

This website didn't help me because I don't know how to start it off because I've only done knitting, not purling. I looked on youtube but I didn't see what I wanted. All I want it to look like is empty squares looped together at the corners. Here's the site I found: http://www.anniemodesitt.com/purl.html

Thanks everyone :)

  1. Basically if you put your needles perfectly verticle (points in the air) When you do a knit stitch you insert the hook into the stitch from bottom up. To purl a stitch you want to make sure you your you are going to knit with is in front of the knitting instead of in the back as when you are knitting and insert the needle in the stitch from the top down. Then yarn over the needle, pull through and pull off as normal.

  2. Your working yarn has to be coming from the front of the work, so if your last stitch was a knit stitch, take the yarn between the needle tips (not over the right needle) to the front.  Now insert your right needle tip into the next stitch on the left needle from right to left.  Wrap the yarn under the right needle tip to the back of it and around, or scoop the yarn up with the needle tip, and pull the new stitch through.  If the next stitch will be purled the yarn is now in position to repeat what you did.  If it is to be knit, bring the yarn to the back again, again between the needle tips, to the knit position.
