How do I do this?:)?

hey, I'm really bad at math and would totally love it if someone could explain how to do this!

- (z + 4) + 13 = 2z

You don't have to give me the answer, i just really need to know how to do this kind of thing to proceed in my course.

Resolve the sign on the terms in parenthesis:

-z - 4 + 13 = 2z

Add z to both sides and do the math on the units:

3z = 9

Divide both sides by 3:

z = 3

Let's see.

1.  Expand the brackets

-(z + 4) + 13  = 2z

-z - 4 + 13 = 2z

2.  Every term with the variable goes on the left, and all other terms go on the right.  Remember to switch signs as you switch sides.

-z - 2z = 4 - 13

3.  Simplify.

-3z = -9

z = 3

Remember your order of operations as you do this.  Hope that helps.

ok...

first i would get rid of the brackets:

- (z) = -z

- (4) = -4

so we now have:

- z - 4 + 13 = 2z

There are two sides of the equation

- z - 4 + 13

and

2z

what you add to one side of the equation you must add to the other side.

- z + z - 4 + 13 = 2z + z

the z's on the left side cancel out because -z + z = 0

so now we have...

-4 + 13 = 2z + z

add the two sides of the equation up...

-4 + 13 = 9

2z + z = 3z

9 = 3z

if we do to one side of the equation, we do to the other, so we can divide both sides by 3.

9 / 3 = 3

3z / 3 = z

3 = z

that is the answer!!!

distribute negative sign to get rid of parenthesis

-z - 4 +13 = 2z

Combine like terms after bringing the -z across the equals sign (remember to change sign

- 4+13=2z+z

9 = 3z

9/3 = z

z= 3
