Question:

How do I drill a hole through a spoon?

I want to drill a hole through a spoon (don't ask). I don't have immediate access to a drill press, and am not sure of what kind of bits I need to use. I need about a 1/2 in hole in a spoon. I have good hand drills but I don't want to burn out the motor of course with an improper bit. What should I do?

  1. caution!  first clamp the spoon  down or have someone hold it tight because it will spin wildly when the bit goes through the back, also drill a small hole first , like 3/16 in before you drill the 1/2 in hole.

  2. First of all use safety glasses. Then a center punch so the drill bit won't wiggle off the location. Then use a vise to keep the spoon ridged .  Start with a small hole at a fast RPM. use plenty oil to keep it cool .When the bit is ready to break through slow down. When going to the 1/2 hole run the drill at a much slower RPM..You may end up with a large burr that will have to be removed by grinding or hand filing. Be careful

  3. i would use the same type of bit you  use for drilling forks

  4. you will need a high speed drill bit (on your drill) for metal and some cutting oil to keep it while you're drilling.

  5. sorry, but I can't get past the "don't ask" part.....

  6. what is the spoon made of? Go to Lowe's or Home depot and ask them for the best kind of bit to use on that type of metal. When you get back put the spoon in a vice and use the hand drill.

My daughter and I made wind chimes out of old silverware and a tin coffee cup...we used my little dremmel tool to do the drilling.
