How do I eliminate surrounding noise?

My bedroom wall has about a 3 ft. gap between the the top of the wall and the ceiling on two sides. On the other side of the wall is the kitchen/living room/dining room area. What can I do to block noise from the other room? I can't drywall because we're renting. I would like something fairly inexpensive too because I'm only a college student.

Thanks

  1. cork squares

  2. If the top of the wall is 8ft or higher, you might consider a suspended ceiling.  They are not expensive and would dampen any sounds.

  3. If you aren't going for style, just fuction, you could look at foam boards (sometimes used for displays) and cut to fit.

If you want style with function you could wrap it with fabric.

  4. I would go with a white or pink noise generator. They are great at bringing up the threshold of noise and if you have a computer just do a search for free white noise generator and run it through some cheap speakers. If it works you got a free simple solution. If you want something thats stand alone the are called sound screens.
