I'm running Vista and wish to encrypt a document or file so only I can read it.

When I right click there is nothing in the drop down box that you click to encrypt or password protect as in my old Windows ME system.

Help please anyone?

  1. i used an AMAZING program called truecrypt, its free. whats it does is take a file any file (mine is a text document) and turn it into an encrypted safe. you can only have 4Gb at a time but you can make as many as you want. there are 2 types of encryption files. there is regular witch is a regular encryption file and there is advanced witch is a regular encrypted files with in another regular encrypted file. what you do is create a "safe" and mount it in truecrypt. you put in your mamassiveassword and it opens it up like a regular folder. you put what ever you want inside and un-mount it witch re-encrypts the folder and everything inside it!

download bellow. its free and yes it works on vista

  2. To encrypt sub menu files in Vista requires you to make a change in the Registry. This is an option to the built in Encrtption in Vista. You need to go into the Registry and use the following route.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER

    Software

    Microsoft

    Windows

    CurrentVersion

    Explorer

    Advanced

In the Right hand pane, create a new 32 bit value called EncryptionContextMenu and give it a value of 1  Now when you Right click on a file you will see a new option called Encrypt
