How do I enter an extension when dialing a phone number?

It depends upon how the PBX you are calling into works.

Just dial the number, then wait for an answer.  If it's a modern computerized PBX which answers, follow the instructions.  It might say something like "Welcome to Acme Inc.  If you know your party's extension, please dial it now."   Or it might tell you to dial some other digit first, then the extension.  Just follow the prompts.

You might still encounter an older system where all incoming calls are answered by an operator/receptionist, in which case you don't dial the extension at all.  When the operator answers, just tell her "Extension x*x please."
