I kind of grew up in the dark so to speak, as my parents never spoke about s*x and periods etc. Now I have children of my own, I can't find words to explain to them the facts of life. I want to be as open as possible but something just hold me back and I'll blurt out things in a negative way in opposed to calmly sitting them down and speak ing one and one. any suggestions?

  1. Find a good book. Have your children read it. Maybe they will understand. Or you read the book to them..answer the questions as positivly as u can.

    HOPE IT HELPS!

  2. How old are they?

I would suggest that at the age of 9 or 10 (girls) you explain what a period is and why we have them.

(the link above might help talk to her, and maybe even him, about it)

I even think that you explain the most basic things to boys at age 11 or 12, just for reference and understanding.

Once the girl(s) have started her period, make sure she understands what could happen and if she doesn't remember, give a brief "why we have it" speech. (she's really not going to want to hear it, because she's going to be embarrassed at first and then later just "old enough to know".)

At age 12 or 13, it would be wise that you make sure that your daughter and/or son (I'm not sure of genders) realize that with having s*x comes responsibility.

At age 14 and 15 let them know that it's okay to tell you about "things". (They may not really do it unless they have the trust that has been built up through the years; my mom told me the same thing, but I just don't really feel like I can't because I'm scared she might jump down my throat. And keep in mind that the guy isn't going to want to tell his mom about his "s*x" life.) If and/or whenever he/she does, don't trip out on them. Make sure you think twice, react calmly, and don't punish them for being honest. Preach using protection though, and possibly get the girl on the pill.

At 16, you can only hope that they are being honest with you. If not, you're probably not going to know much about what's happen in his/her life, especially since he/she will probably be a certified driver. (Teenagers are always on the go, between friends/family/partying/school/extra curricular; as my mom says, "I hardly ever see you anymore.")

    Little Facts:

    - A lot of girls start shaving in fifth grade, or about the age of 10/11.

    - 52% of teenagers reported having s*x at least once between the ages of 15 to 19.

    - A lot of guys learn what and/or how to "relieve themselves" during their middle school years. Approximately ages: 11-14

    - A majority of girls start wearing makeup in the middle school years. Again, approximately ages: 11-14

Have a nice day and good luck :)
