How do I export a web layout from Illustrator?

I just finished my awesome website layout on Adobe Illustrator. It saves as an .ai file. I want this layout to be web accessible, so that it can frame the contents of the site. The problem is I can't figure out how to export the .ai file into Dreamweaver or even Fireworks. Right now I just have the layout design and I truly do not know where to go next. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated!

  1. Hmmm i've never heard of making a layout in Illustrator... but that doesnt mean it cant be done!

Do you have Photoshop as well? If so, I'd suggest saving the entire Image in Illustrator as a JPEG or GIF file, then opening it in Photoshop. Photoshop is awesome as far as making stuff for the web- all it takes is a few clicks. There's an option in the file menu that is, "save for web & devices" & that'll write the basic first html code for you. then you can open it in dreamweaver.

Otherwise id say just try saving it as a JPEG, then move to Dreamweaver. AI files won't work anywhere except in Illustrator.
