Question:

How do I extend my wireless router signal?

Can it be done by just adding another router and giving it the same SSID and placing it upstairs (the area where there is a weaker signal)? If so, can anyone please give me detailed information on how to do this? Any help is welcome, thanks!

  1. Do away with that garbage, I have a lap top, go to sprint or one of the wire less places and get a plug in that plugs in the side of your lap top, you can go anywhere with it, in a airplane if you want.

  2. Yes, this is possible.  You need another router or a range extender. When you set it up, you'll need to follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to turn off DHCP and then set it to repeater mode.  This is different from router to router, so I can't give specific instructions.

  3. most routers have antennas to extend their signal it can be purchased at the same place you bought your router. a plug-in to a laptop only allows the laptop wireless access it does not extend the signal.

  4. There are two good options available to  you.  Both are range extenders.

The first involves a unit that will look a lot like a router, but is set up to pick up the signal from your router, logging on just like your laptop would, and then re-broadcast the signal, to extend the range to a remote area.   Thus giving you an oval coverage pattern.   You would place the extender part way between the remote area with weak signal, and the main router.  The only connection the box has is the power cord to the wall, all other connections are wireless.

The second option is a power line extender system, which consists of and injector unit that takes the signal from your router, via a hard wire cable, and injects it into the house wiring.  You then have one or more pick ups that are placed i the remote areas that need service, which broadcast and receive the wireless signal.  The injector plugs into a house outlet and has a hard wire Ethernet cable plugged into the router.  It is therefore located at the router.  The broadcasters are also plugged into a house outlet, and then connect wirelessly to the laptop, printer of desktop that is the remote area.  These work well as long as all the house outlets used are on the same breaker  or fuse box.
