How do I fax out of area code?

Do I dial 1 first? It wont go through either way. are business fax machines turned off during non-working hours?

THE FAX MACHINE IS ON 24 / 7 AND 365 DAYS OF THE YEAR. NO THEY ARE NOT OFF THEY'RE ON ALL THE TIME.. FIRST I DIAL 1 THE THAN THE AREA CODE THAN THE THE NUMBER..

Fax machines are ususally set to AUTO-receive fax messages during non-working hours.  

Set you printed message into the fax machine. Dial the area code (of the place where you are sending the fax message) followed by the fax number. Wait for the fax tone.  Press  the START button of your machine when you hear the fax tone on the other end before putting down the phone.  Your fax machine will print a report if the message got through or not.

If the fax number you are trying to reach is not ringing, or doesn't give you a fax tone, the machine is probably off if not busted. Try again later on a week-day, during office hours.
