How do I feed my 3 female rats equal amounts each. Because I don't want 1 or 2 to boss the other and eat most of the food in the food bowl.

Should I put 3 separate food bowls in?

Thank you.

  1. Just have 3 food bowls spaced out on the floor of the cage ( a food bowl can even mean a small Tupperware item) and 3 water bottles, too, which may be even more important. Eventually they will catch on an all claim their own food bowl area. If you see two of them sharing, pick one up and set it in front of another food bowl to let her know she can have her own. However, as long as they're not fighting, there should be no problem :)

  2. well do your rats have different sleeping spots? If they do, just put some food near your rats sleeping spots, so they will have an equal amout of food.

  3. I agree with Anna M but just be careful that they're then not over eating because there's so much food in their cage. If one starts to look fatter then the others then maybe shes stealing more food from the others so you'll have to devise a new plan! I would try just one food bowl to begin with but if they fight or you know that one isn't eating enough then change this. Good luck!

  4. I have 12 rats. 3 in each cage. I always put out a food bowl and allow my rats to eat as much as they want and need . Rats will not overeat.but they do like to eat all throughout the day and night. For my cages that have a rat who is very dominant and will not allow 1 or both of the other rats to eat I will provide 2 food bowls. I always put out the same amount of food daily and change the food every day. All I do when I provide 2 bowls is put half of the amount I normally provide for the 3 rats into each bowl. You do not need to give them extra food or put out 3 bowls. Just make sure you are putting out enough to feed all 3 rats for a 24 hour period. Remember that they snack all day and night. And they are up all night while you are sleeping. You will not have to put up 3 water bottles.. I have never ever had my rats fight over water. Also remember that one is not stealing the food because she is hungry , It is all to show who is top dog (rat). It all has to do with dominance and showing who is the boss.Good luck.

  5. if you have 3 rats, then put at least more then 15 in the food dish. thats more than they will eat, there for if one rat steals more then their will be enough for the other rats. eather way, i NEVER saw my rats fight over food blocks, only treats. if that doesnt work, and if you see 1 or 2 of the rats getting skinny. take it to the vet. good luck. if you have any other rat questions please email me at christyhar@sbcglobal.net

  6. Maybe every day, like twice a day or whatever, you can take one of them out, and put it in like a seperate cage, or something and let it eat, and then do it again for all the others.  I don't really know, LOL.  Just a suggestion.
