How do I figure cubic yards of sand for a project(backfill)?

  1. Take length x width x depth in feet, then divide by 27.  hope this helps.


  2. A yard of dirt or sand is 3' x 3' x 3', or 27 cubic feet, and if you are spreading it 6" deep, you would be able to spread 27 cubic feet (1 cubic yard) across 54 square feet; ie   9' x 6' x 6 inches deep.  With this and previous answers, you should get the idea, okay?

  3. Use a calculator.  :)

  4. length x width x thickness(convert inches to decimal) and divide by 27.  This will tell you the number of yards needed.
