How do I file as an independent?

My parents do not support me financially. I want to file as an independent on my FAFSA but I'm not 24 (I'm 22), I'm not married, nor do i have any children. There is an area on the FAFSA that asks if you support someone with more than half of your income that qualifies you as an independent.... Well my girlfriend and I do live together and we support each other with our incomes.... so.... would I qualify? And how do they verify this?

Please answer all questions. Thank you!

  1. Unless you are legally married to your girlfriend this will not make you independent.  It sounds like she supports herself financially.  Nice try though.

To verify they will ask you your relationship to her.. if you say roommate or girlfriend or something of the sort they will correct your fafsa to dependent and ask for your parents tax forms and info.
