  1. he just has to send you a power of attorney and you take that with you... its no big deal we do it that way cause im always gone...

  2. You have three options

1.) file them with someone elses help. For this you will need a special POA. You can get this done on post or at a regular tax agency. I have heard of wives who were able to file with just a general POA though.

2.) File online for free. Use H and R Block. You do not have to be deployed any military member can file for free through army onescource. We use this every year and I always file for both of us.

3.) If he is the only one working file when he gets back though you mentioned filing jointly and you really only need to do that if you work too.

  3. actually you have an automatic extension until 90 days after he returns from the deployment to file.

  4. I believe a general power of attorney and his W-2...I don't remember which copy of the W-2.  Sometimes the commander of the tax place will allow a copy off of dfas though.  Contact your posts tax center and they will let you know exactly what you need.

  5. prior to him deploying you should have set up a general power of attorney (or a special power of attorney stating its for tax purposes).  most posts have a free tax preparation team for you to use, you go there with all of your social security cards, and his W-2 you print off of mypay, Also bring any W-2's you might have earned if you work too.  If you have any kids, bring their social security cards too, then the people at the office will do the rest.  If you want your refund direct deposited, bring your routing number and account number too.

If you do not work and your husband is deployed, you do not have to file until he gets back, but you can file if you guys have kids, if you qualify for earned income credit or child tax credit.

  6. Read this.

  7. You can do your taxes online for free because your dh is in the military through places like taxslayer.  Or if you wish to use the facilities on base then you will need a Specific POA to be filing for them.
